Matt Greene to bring Stanley Cup to Grand Ledge Part II

With Matt Greene bringing the Stanley Cup to his hometown of Grand Ledge, Mich., his father took time to reflect on the path he took to get to this point.

Matt Greene's father, James Greene, said his son's hockey career started by watching his older brother and sister play, and wanting to do the same.

Once Matt Greene was more established in the sport of hockey, he began to play in a travel hockey league, which took him and his parents all around the state of Michigan.

"By in large we were traveling a lot to the Detroit area, to Grand Rapids, Battle Creek, Saginaw, Flint, Jackson," said James Greene.

Though James Greene has many reasons to be proud of his son's accomplishments on the ice, he also has many proud moments of his son off the ice.

"One that comes to mind is the weekend he was drafted into the National Hockey League," said James Greene.

James Greene said his son was with his friend who was also suppose to be drafted, but never was. When Matt Greene received multiple offers from a news station to do an interview, he declined.

James Greene said that he called his son later that week and asked him why he turned down the interview.

James Greene said his son told him "A really good day for me was a really bad day for Joe (Matt's friend) and I didn't want to make it any worse."

Matt Greene to bring Stanley Cup to Grand Ledge Part I

The city of Grand Ledge will have a day with hockey's most prestigious award as Los Angeles King's defenseman Matt Greene plans to bring the Stanley Cup to his hometown.

The Kings defeated the New Jersey Devils on June 11, 6-1 to clinch the franchise's first Stanley Cup championship.

Chad Guild, owner of First Place Sports in Grand Ledge, said he and Greene have been planning the festivities for the day Greene gets the Stanley cup.

"The tentative plans for the Cup coming to Grand Ledge are a parade," said Guild. "We’re thinking we’re going to take it up to the high school, probably logistically the football field makes the most sense."

Guild said it is difficult to plan dates for the events because the NHL makes a schedule for when all the players get their day with the Cup, and that has yet to be released.

Guild said throughout the whole experiences Greene has had over the past two weeks, Greene remains humble.

"He’s going to be in a t-shirt and a pair of shorts,” said Guild. “It’s very rare to catch the guy in a suit. He’s got a really good work ethic and a lot of it comes back down to his parents."

State News Reporter Talks MSU Baseball
